This trip is aboard S.V Rum Runner, a 66ft mono hull sail boat. Carrying a maximum of 16 divers plus crew. The trip is 3 nights with 8-9 dives at Holmes Reef (including 1 night dive), plus 1 sunrise dive on the Great Barrier Reef. Depart Cairns Australia on Friday at 4.00pm and returning on Monday 11.00am
Visits Holmes Reef, a reef system lying some 90 miles outside the Great Barrier Reef. Due to its isolation the reef has incredible visibility (almost always over 30 meters).
On this Coral Sea trip you can get up to 10 amazing and adventurous dives. We emphasize the term "adventurous" as any open ocean trip can get bumpy, and once outside the Great Barrier Reef there is no protection from Pacific Ocean swells on the trip out to Holmes Reef .
Very little of these reefs have ever been dived, surrounded by depths of 1000 meters, rising vertically to the surface, offering magnificent wall and shark diving opportunities. You also get to dive with large pelagics, huge gorgonian fans, and several species of tropical fish endemic only to the Coral Sea. This is a truly unique dive location.
We make no apologies for what Rum Runner is… a 20m Motor Sailing Schooner, built in 1984, and with a nearly indestructible fiberglass hull. The vessel will accommodate up to 16 guests in multi share twin single bunk areas, semi-private twin single bunk cabins, and a 4-share single bunk cabin. She is the equivalent of a mutli share hostel, just on water.
As typical with sailboats, the cabins are not spacious or private; they are for resting and sleeping. The common areas include an open saloon area and galley inside, and both covered and open outside deck areas. We have USB, 12V dc and 240V ac for charging cameras and phones, and separate Male and Female Toilet - Shower Cabinet with Hot water.
Overall, Rum Runner is a comfortable sailboat, well suited for the adventurous. It is by no means a luxury dive boat. Those seeking pure sailing, privacy and luxury should consider elsewhere. Rum Runner is a great opportunity to meet other divers and guest from around the world and have fun with the crew doing it!
